A technical Question
Q7: How many ways can you make something that
looks more or less like:
After you make the squares in a given symmetry, fill them in and see
what the symmetry really is...
Thus we see some trouble; this may have been apparent
(or the source of frustration) in last week's homework. First, symmetries
can be produced by a sub-symmetry. Just keep your eyes out for this problem.
Second, and more seriously, many choices of motif and generating isometries
can produce the same symmetry. This seems like a serious obstacle to understanding
the different possiblities. But never fear... a surprise will save us...
So, What do all those symbols mean anyway?
